Increased resources(CPU/Memory) usage over time and application crashes

Post by rajeshrajan »

As part of our Java upgrade, we have decided to transition from Oracle Java 7 to Red Hat OpenJDK 8 for our applications. Our desktop-based JNLP application, which previously used javaws from Oracle Java 7, now launches using OpenWebStart. While the application starts successfully(windows 10/11), we have observed a gradual increase in system slowness, even when the application is idle for extended periods.

Monitoring CPU utilization and memory management has revealed a steady increase in resource usage. Eventually, both the application and the system become unresponsive, displaying a black screen with no available options. Upon forcefully terminating the application, we found several hs_error files in the OpenWebStart that provide details about the heap status before/after garbage collection and memory being fully utilized. Please can you provide support on a possible fix?

What is your OWS Logging > Log Console setting? Is it Show?

OWS runs in two stages. Firstly it starts itself with the bundled JRE and processes the Jnlp file, especially for the Java version specified in it. Then it starts the second stage with the JVM that matches the JVM specified in the Jnlp file and downloads the resources and starts the application specified in the Jnlp file. After this it has no role to play in the execution of the application.

Hi Janak,

Thanks for your reply

We have not set the log console to Show, it is set to Hide.

we have enabled two checkboxes, one is log content of jnlp files and the other is Increase verbosity of the log(loglevel = debug).

As part of the investigation, we have uninstalled the OWS and used Javaws from RedHat OpenJDK itself to launch the .jnlp application, It is giving a consistent performance and no memory leak reported so far.

The OWS JVM Manager is also configured with the same OpenJDK mentioned above, but it is giving high latency and memory leak after a period.

Can you try by setting the console to Disable?

From which version of RedHat OpenJDK did you use javaws?

Which version of JVM did you use to run the Jnlp application?

Hi Janak,

Thank you for your suggestion.

I have disabled the console configuration and started the application. We will monitor the performance for a while to see if there are any improvements. Could you please explain the reason for disabling the console? Are there any known issues related to the console that have been reported?

Further to the answers to the question related to the OpenJDK,

OpenJDK version - java-1.8.0-openjdk-1.8.0.392(RedHat)
OWS JVM Manager is also configured with the same OpenJDK version.
